Republican Celeste Maloy has won a Utah special election to replace her former boss, U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart, in a race that will put a woman back among Utah’s five-member congressional delegation for the first time since 2019.Maloy beat state Sen. Kathleen Riebe, who as minority whip is the Utah Senate’s second-ranking Democrat. Stewart resigned in September after 10 years in Congress because his wife is ill.Maloy was Stewart’s chief legal counsel. She had Stewart’s endorsement and that of former Utah U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop, and was favored to win in the reliably Republican 2nd District, which sprawls from Salt Lake City to the state’s western and southern edges.Maloy will be only the fifth woman in history to represent Utah in the U.S. House. The most recent was Mia Love, who served from 2015-2019 and was the state’s first Black congresswoman. Kyle Wilder authoring greatest comeback yet

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:30:03 GMT

On a late September afternoon, Chelmsford senior Kyle Wilder asked a question no 17-year old should ever have to utter.“Am I going to die?”Now nearly two months later Kyle is at home with a semblance of peace, using the same qualities that built him into a varsity quarterback to overcome a life-altering two weeks and find hope in his future.“Always believe and never give up,” Kyle said. “I always believed and I never gave up and I am here today smiling.”Kyle was always the quarterback of Chelmsford’s future. A commensurate role model for his teammates, Kyle is defined not by bravado or flamboyance but rather a calm, kind-spirited nature filled with internal resilience. His first varsity pass as a freshman late in the season was a touchdown. In his sophomore and junior campaigns the team went 8-3 and last year hosted a state tournament game. Yet his senior year never made it past week three. On Friday Sept. 22, Kyle made a rare appearance on d...

Turn Thanksgiving leftovers into a knockout meal

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:30:03 GMT

Let’s admit that Thanksgiving Day leftovers, though familiar and comforting, are boring. But with the roasting, toasting and simmering already done, they make a blank canvas for the adventuresome cook.Leftover turkey is perfect in a hearty soup or stew, whether or not you simmer up your own stock. Take turkey pho, the gingery Asian noodle soup. It’s quick and light, a slurpable warming meal in a bowl (see recipe). My grandmother’s traditional stuffing is so fussy, I repurpose every crumb — top it with fried or scrambled eggs for brunch or turn it into a savory bread pudding. It inspired the mushroom croquettes (see recipe).Mashed potatoes, spiked with chopped jalapeño and topped with Cheddar, make a lush potato gratin. Add them to soups and stews to give them body or use them to top turkey and vegetable shepherd’s pies.Curried sweet potato bisque dispatches what’s left of the candied side dish. Just whir those sweet potatoes with coconut milk and your fa...

Kerrigan: Biden’s IP waiver disaster for small businesses

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:30:03 GMT

The Biden administration is considering giving away ground-breaking American technologies to China, India, and other countries — yes, for free. This giveaway would ravage the small businesses that drive innovation in the United States, and crush the economy in the process. The give-a-away would waive aspects of the World Trade Organization’s (WTO’s) Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, or TRIPS Agreement, which sets global shared standards for intellectual property (IP) protection. Last year, with the Biden administration’s blessing, the WTO waived certain commitments in the TRIPS Agreement for COVID vaccines. Not a single shot can be attributed to that action. Now, the Biden administration may double down on failed policy, and potentially expand the waiver to COVID therapies and tests. An expanded IP waiver would have disastrous consequences for the life sciences sector, and by extension small businesses. Nine out of 10 U.S. phar...

‘Wish’ has lots of Disney star power

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:30:03 GMT

The animated, centenary effort “Wish” might be one of the most self-referential films from Disney. This is the company that has asked fans to “wish upon a star” ever since “Pinocchio” (1940). Directed by Chris Buck of “Frozen” and Fawn Veerasunthorn, making her debut, and written by Jennifer Lee (“Frozen”) and Allison Moore, “Wish” is set in the mythical kingdom of Rosas, a vaguely Latin place in the Mediterranean Sea, where the inhabitants literally give their wishes to their leader Magnifico (Chris Pine), a rather obviously evil sorcerer, who stores the stolen wishes in bubbles in the ceiling of his tower, where his study and laboratory are situated. When they give up their wishes, the inhabitants forget what they were and feel an emptiness they can never fill. The strong-willed, rebellious 17-year-old girl named Asha (Academy Award-winner Ariana DeBose), who is about to celebrate her grandfather’s 100th birthday, is given a chance to become Magnifico’s apprentice. Asha...

Lowry: In praise of the Pilgrims & their legacy

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:30:03 GMT

The Pilgrims were unquestionably “settler colonialists.”As such, they are increasingly out of favor as Thanksgiving begins to suffer some of the erosion that has drastically diminished Columbus Day. Thanksgiving is too big a holiday to get dethroned, at least anytime soon, but it’s worth sticking up for the Pilgrims now accused of myriad sins. They have, no doubt, been simplified, airbrushed and romanticized over the years, yet that’s no reason to make them cardboard cut-out villains in a morality tale about the evils of European civilization.Theirs is a story of extraordinary endurance and faithfulness, in which can be seen glimmers of what would become a great experiment in republican government on these shores. The Pilgrims were so-called separatists who rejected the Church of England. Harried out of England, they escaped to the Netherlands in pursuit of the right to worship as they pleased. Then, a group decided to make the leap across the Atlantic. They did...

Editorial: Beacon Hill spending sprees must stop

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:30:03 GMT

Spending other people’s money is addictive, and unfortunately for Massachusetts, our state Legislature is hooked. It’s with this understanding that we both applaud the business leaders calling on Beacon Hill to dial back expenditures, and fear that it won’t make any difference.“The drastic increase in government spending over the past five years is a growing concern for our future competitiveness and may detrimentally impact the long-term fiscal health of Massachusetts,” the heads of nine business groups said in a letter to Gov. Maura Healey and legislative leaders released Tuesday by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. As business leaders, they know that the actions of today affect tomorrow’s outcomes – the future of their companies and their workers depend on it. But for Bay State pols, today’s massive spending is but a precursor to tomorrow’s cash outlays meant to offset the damage.State officials are ramping up the fiscal y...

Ridley Scott wages war spectacularly in ‘Napoleon’

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:30:03 GMT

Ridley Scott serves up dazzling spectacle in “Napoleon,” a historical drama about the French general played with comic and dramatic flair by Academy Award-winner Joaquin Phoenix. It’s hard to top a beginning that features a bloodthirsty mob cheering the guillotining of Marie Antoinette. How far are we from such horrors, one wonders?Scott, screenwriter David Scarpa (“All the Money in the World”), cinematographer Darius Wolski (Scott’s “The Martian”), production designer Arthur Max (Scott’s “Gladiator”) and the rest of the production crew have conjured up some large-scale military action we don’t see much these days. Soldiers in the thousands face each other across open fields. In the Battle of Austerlitz and an evocation of “Alexander Nevsky” (1938), Napoleon fires his cannons upon retreating Russians, fleeing across a frozen lake, drowning countless numbers, along with their horses. In the battle against the British occupiers of Toulon, a battle that earns hi...
