ST. LOUIS -- The Animal Protective Association of Missouri is looking for dog walkers. They need 35 new volunteers for 3-hour shifts each day. The walks will help pets in the shelter get daily exercise while waiting for their adoptive homes. Volunteers are also needed for shelter tasks, such as cleaning and laundry."The number of animals we are currently caring for consistently exceeds 500 across both locations on any given day, and 200 more arrive each week. To put it into perspective, today we have 318 dogs in our care. To give each dog a minimum of two 10-minute walks during the day, we need a total of 35 staff members and volunteers walking dogs for 3-hour shifts each day. If members of the community were willing to commit to just one of those shifts each week, it would collectively make a big difference," states Sarah Javier, president and CEO of the APA.The APA says that nearly 9,000 animals have been in their facilities this year. They expect to see more dogs and cats in thei...Kiszla vs. Gabriel: Has safety Kareem Jackson become too dangerous to play for Broncos?

Kiz: Coming off a suspension by the NFL for illegal hits, Broncos safety Kareem Jackson would have to be a complete knucklehead to continue tackling with the crown of his helmet. Yet there he was against Minnesota, lowering his head to blast Vikings quarterback Josh Dobbs on the game’s opening series. Although no flag was thrown on the play, there’s no doubt in my mind Jackson deserves a fine and another suspension. Has his repeated run-ins with league authorities made Jackson too much of a safety risk for the Broncos to trust on the field?Take Our Poll(function(d,c,j){if(!d.getElementById(j)){var pd=d.createElement(c),s;pd.id=j;pd.src='https://www.denverpost.com/wp-content/plugins/polldaddy/js/polldaddy-shortcode.js';s=d.getElementsByTagName(c)[0];s.parentNode.insertBefore(pd,s);} else if(typeof jQuery !=='undefined')jQuery(d.body).trigger('pd-script-load');}(document,'script','pd-polldaddy-loader'));Gabriel: Opposing teams certainly are going to think so, Kiz. Will Larimer County plug up its plans?

After a half-decade struggle by Thornton to claim thousands of acre-feet of water a year from the Cache La Poudre River near Fort Collins, the north Denver suburb is starting over with a new water pipe route. As Thornton filed its latest application for a water pipe permit with Larimer County on Monday, officials had hope that they would face less resistance this time. But forces that have lined up against the city in recent years have no intention of dropping their fight against a 42-inch-wide pipe that would run across the county — arguing the project holds the potential to negatively impact landowners while doing nothing to improve the health of the Poudre. They want Thornton to leave its water in the Poudre, allowing it to flow through Fort Collins before it’s taken out.The issue will once again land in the laps of Larimer County’s three commissioners, who could either approve or reject Thornton’s new pipe alignment in a vote expected by March.A no vote wou...The crispy, juicy joy of (carefully) deep-frying a turkey

By Kim Severson, The New York TimesI hate stunt food. You will not see me ordering a steak wrapped in gold leaf. I won’t do a caviar bump. I don’t care about that time you drank wine with a snake in it.Nor am I a fan of the Cajun turducken, which is a boned chicken wrapped in a boned duck wrapped in a boned turkey with some dressing tucked in. It does a disservice to all the birds involved. It also spawned the piecaken, a four-dessert monster I hesitate even to mention because I don’t want to encourage it.I do, however, love a deep-fried turkey.I know that standing in the backyard and lowering a turkey into 4 gallons of boiling peanut oil has all the markings of stunt food. And it’s nothing I would have considered until I moved to the South.Five years ago, I went to a friend’s house for Thanksgiving. An ex-boyfriend was in the back, frying a turkey. Let me tell you, my friends, I had never tasted turkey as delicious — and I have cooked, tasted or tested at least 100 turkeys in...SUV crashes into homeless encampment at end of reported police pursuit
