EVANSTON, Ill. — Two former assistant baseball coaches and the director of baseball operations at Northwestern University are set to file a lawsuit against the school and several additional parties Monday.According to a press release from the Offices of Clifford Law, the complaint — to be filed on behalf of Dusty Napoleon, Jon Strauss and Chris Beacom — alleges retaliatory discharge, harassment, bullying and abuse that led to Napoleon, Strauss and Beacom's contracts being discharged against Northwestern University, former head baseball coach Jim Foster, and several other members of the athletics administration. The complaint also alleges charges of racism, sexism and egregious tortious conduct, including unwarranted retaliation against these coaches after they reported NCAA violations by Foster to university officials, and seeks compensation in excess of $50,000 for alleged damages.“The prejudicial and biased attitude of the former head coach that also included the mismanagement of ...Maui residents worry a rebuilt Lahaina could slip into the hands of wealthy outsiders

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Richy Palalay so closely identifies with his Maui hometown that he had a tattoo artist permanently ink “Lahaina Grown” on his forearms when he was 16.But a chronic housing shortage and an influx of second-home buyers and wealthy transplants have been displacing residents like Palalay who give Lahaina its spirit and identity.A fast-moving wildfire that incinerated much of the compact coastal settlement last week has multiplied concerns that any homes rebuilt there will be targeted at affluent outsiders seeking a tropical haven. That would turbo-charge what is already one of Hawaii’s gravest and biggest challenges: the exodus and displacement of Native Hawaiian and local-born residents who can no longer afford to live in their homeland.“I’m more concerned of big land developers coming in and seeing this charred land as an opportunity to rebuild,” Palalay said Saturday at a shelter for evacuees.Hotels and condos “that we can’t afford, tha...Man found dead in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The City of Austin and The Austin Pride Foundation celebrated the 33rd Austin Pride Parade Saturday night. Each year, the city and organization host a parade and festival in August to celebrate and commemorate the LGBTQ+ community. For decades, communities across the country have commemorated the history of the LGBTQ+ rights movement with pride parades, traditionally held in June. The symbolism of the timeframe dates back to the Stonewall riots in New York City’s Greenwich Village, which began in late June of 1969. THE MORE YOU KNOW: Why is Austin’s pride parade celebrated in August? To mark the one-year anniversary of the uprising, the first Pride marches were held on June 28, 1970, in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco, growing in prominence in the years since. Since 2010, The Austin Pride Foundation (TAPF) has organized the city’s official pride parade, in addition to hosting year-round events and working to provide resources to and offer education...Twins pitchers shut down frustrated Phillies hitters in 3-0 win

PHILADELPHIA — Alec Bohm conceded that, yes, the Phillies and Twins will never know how the game might have turned had a borderline called strike three been ruled ball four to drive in a run and bring Bryce Harper up with the bases loaded. But Bohm thought the Phillies were in the right to find out.Instead, Bohm slammed his bat in anger, got tossed from the game and his manager soon followed him into the clubhouse, ejected for arguing balls and strikes, in a 3-0 loss to the Twins on Sunday at Citizens Bank Park.Twins reliever Caleb Thielbar retired slugger Kyle Schwarber and fanned Bohm to escape a bases-loaded jam in the seventh that preserved a 2-0 lead.“He’s a fearless guy,” Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli said of his veteran left-hander. ”That’s big-time stuff. Going in there, the crowd’s into the game, he goes at really good hitters and he beat them. He beat them today. I like giving him the ball.”The Twins added an insurance run in the ninth innin...Families celebrate 3rd annual St. Charles Jewish Festival

(NEXSTAR) — You may have an idea of how much alcohol your community drinks. There may even be a certain sense of pride regarding how much or how little that is. But recently released data helps illustrate which areas in the U.S. are prone to excessive drinking and which aren’t. Earlier this year, the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute released its 2023 County Health Rankings and Roadmaps report, which is meant to raise awareness about factors that can impact health outcomes and disparities nationwide.Researchers use numerous data points to determine the length and quality of life on a state-by-state basis. Among those factors is alcohol use, including reported excessive drinking. To determine the rates of excessive drinking per state, researchers used self-reported data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance system. For the 2023 report, the University of Wisconsin used data from 2020 — the first year of the COV...Local musician turns tragedy into triumph with latest song addressing robbery experiences, rise in crime in L.A.

Rising pop artist Izza is just one of the people on the long list of victims of violent crimes across Los Angeles. However, she might be the only one who decided to turn her experiences into a song. The Encino native had several belongings stolen from her house in Aug. 2022, and while she was devastated to have lost her possessions, she was more focused on apprehending those who were responsible for taking them. “I felt extreme loss and defeat, but even though I lost so many of my things, all I cared about was catching the robbers,” Izza said. “I worked closely with the detective that was assigned to my case and although he tried his best, there were hundreds of other cases that took precedence over mine.” This wasn’t the only time Izza fell victim to a burglary; in 2020, she was followed home by a homeless man who then broke into her house, she said. LAS VEGAS — Trey Lance’s first touchdown pass in 363 days never reached its intended receiver. Instead, it nearly got intercepted, and, eventually, it bounced into Ross Dwelley’s sure hands in the end zone. This, of course, is a great city to have luck turn your way.But the 49ers need Lance to be both lucky and good. Otherwise, his potential job as Brock Purdy’s backup will belong to Sam Darnold, who had a pedestrian debut after Lance’s shaky, first-half duty in Sunday’s preseason opener at the Raiders. The 34-7 final marked the most lopsided preseason loss in coach Kyle Shanahan’s seven seasons.San Francisco 49ers tight end Ross Dwelley (82) scores a touchdown as Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Duke Shelley (23) defends during the first half of an NFL preseason football game, Sunday, Aug. 13, 2023, in Las Vegas.
