DOJ’s Office of Civil Rights calls for criminal investigation of Colorado Springs police officers’ beating of Black man The Department of Justice’s Office of Civil Rights has referred for federal criminal investigation the allegation that Colorado Springs police used excessive force in the violent arrest of a Black man last year, according to a letter released Monday by that man’s attorneys. The criminal referral, made last week by Michael Alston, director of the DOJ’s Office of Civil Rights, comes two months after the Colorado Springs Police Department announced an internal investigation had found officers did not use excessive force while arresting 29-year-old Dalvin Gadson in October 2022.“By referring this case for criminal investigation, the Department of Justice is putting these officers on notice,” Kevin Mehr, one of Gadson’s attorneys, said in a news release. “The CSPD may not take brutality seriously, but the DOJ does.”Representatives of the Colorado Springs Police Department were not immediately available for comment Monday.Alston’s letter states Gadson filed a ...

Broncos stock report: A couple of impressive undrafted rookies, but troubling performances all around in trenches for Denver Stock UpRB Jaleel McLaughlinThe rookie running back had 63 yards and a touchdown on the Broncos’ opening drive and continued showing big-play ability. McLaughlin finished with 89 total yards on 12 touches and now has 193 on 22 over his past two games. He’s tied for the team lead with three touchdowns, fifth on the team in scrimmage yards (206) overall and is averaging 7.1 per touch. Not bad for an undrafted free agent.Pat Surtain IIRarely is it good when players’ parents tweet during blowout losses, but it’s difficult to argue with Patrick Surtain Sr.’s sentiment during the Miami game that PS2 deserves better. Second half of the historic loss to the Dolphins aside, he’s playing really well. On Sunday, Jets No. 1 Garrett Wilson didn’t do much against Surtain — the one time he had a step down the sideline, Zach Wilson threw the ball out of bounds. When Denver really needed a stop, the All-Pro corner came up with a pick. And yet, the unit as a whole has been the worst in football by a ...

The baked fish below from Ali Slagle is just that: a streamlined dish that’s simple to make and goes with just about any seasoning or side. (The other four recipes are just downright delicious.)Baked Tilapia. Tilapia is great for picky eaters because it’s mildly flavored and sweet — not fishy at all. Food Stylist: Simon Andrews (David Malosh, The New York Times)1. Baked TilapiaTilapia has a flaky texture and a sweet, mild taste, so it welcomes assertive seasonings. This baked, sheet-pan recipe coats the fish with butter, lemon, garlic and parsley, but feel free to switch up the flavor as you like; paprika, Old Bay, ginger, lime and tarragon would all be great. Keep in mind that there are environmental issues around tilapia farming, so use resources such as Seafood ...

49ers’ offensive scoring spree took root in Bosa-less training camp

49ers’ offensive scoring spree took root in Bosa-less training camp SANTA CLARA — All eyes were on Brock Purdy’s surgically repaired elbow, and no eyes were on Nick Bosa. It was two months ago at training camp, and the 49ers were preparing to stage their NFL coup.Purdy’s elbow was responding remarkably well, albeit with daily interceptions that reporters obsessively tracked. Bosa, meanwhile, was bunkered at home in Florida, waiting to become the NFL’s highest-paid non-quarterback.How did those two players’ actions pave the way for the 49ers’ scoring spree in their 5-0 start, the latest win coming with Sunday night’s 42-10 rout of the Dallas Cowboys?“Honestly the best thing about training camp for us was really that Nick Bosa didn’t play, and so we were actually able to have an offense,” tight end George Kittle said. “(Bosa) didn’t have to disrupt every single play if he wasn’t going against Trent Williams. Nothing against our tackles, that’s just how good Nick Bosa is.“We were actually able to have fun drives,” Kittle said. “(Purdy) was able t...

Attack leaves many Israelis feeling abandoned by military

Attack leaves many Israelis feeling abandoned by military By Amy Teibel | Associated PressJERUSALEM — It was, they thought, an ironclad social contract. Israeli citizens would serve in the military and live along enemy borders. In exchange, the army would defend them. That contract was shattered Saturday when hundreds of Hamas militants breached Israel’s defenses from the Gaza Strip, pouring in by air, land and sea on a rampage that would leave hundreds dead. The infiltration caught Israel’s storied high-tech army completely unaware and stunned a country that prides itself on military prowess.Further shocking Israelis was how long it took the military to respond. As thousands in southern Israel suddenly found themselves besieged, their cries for help went unanswered for hours. Holed up inside homes and safe rooms as militants sprayed bullets, torched homes and hurled grenades, they turned in desperation to social media, to journalists and to friends, beseeching the army to save them. The weekend attacks and the military’s r...

RFK Jr. exits the Democratic primary, will run as independent By Ali Swenson | Associated PressPHILADELPHIA — Longtime environmental lawyer and anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Monday he’ll run for president as an independent and drop his Democratic primary bid, adding a wrinkle to a 2024 race heading toward a likely rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.Speaking Monday from Philadelphia’s Independence Mall, where America’s founding documents were adopted, Kennedy said there is a “rising tide of discontent” in the country and said he wants to make a “new Declaration of Independence” — from corporations, the media and the two major political parties.“I’ve come here today to declare our independence from the tyranny of corruption which robs us of affordable lives, our belief in the future, and our respect for each other,” Kennedy said. “But to do that I must first declare my own independence. Independence from the Democratic Party an...
